Four things, in rough order of how often they are the culprit. None of them is truck availability.
A title that is not in hand
The single most common delay. A duplicate title takes days to weeks depending on the state. Many states accept registration plus photo ID on older vehicles, so ask before assuming you have to wait.
A lien nobody released
A loan settled fifteen years ago can still show on record. Clearing it needs a written release from the lender, which is usually a phone call but rarely an instant one.
Someone else has to authorize the release
A body shop, impound lot or storage yard will not hand a vehicle over without the owner's say-so and any outstanding balance settled. Start that conversation before booking.
A co-owner who is not present
Jointly titled vehicles normally need both signatures. Arranging the second one is easy but it is not same-day if you discover it on pickup day.
