What You Need to Sell Your Junk Car: Documents, Prep, and Pickup Day

Getting cash for a junk car is straightforward when you are prepared. Most transactions take 15 to 30 minutes from the time the driver arrives to the time the car is on the truck. The sellers who get tripped up are almost always missing one document or left something valuable in the car. This guide covers everything you need before scheduling pickup.

Documents and Items Required

Document or itemRequired?Notes
Vehicle titleUsuallyProves ownership; alternatives available if lost
Valid photo IDAlwaysMust match the name on the title
KeysPreferredNot required, but may increase the offer slightly
RegistrationSome statesHelps verify ownership if title is unavailable
Lien releaseIf applicableRequired if there is an outstanding loan on the vehicle

Vehicle Title

The title is your proof of ownership. You sign it over to the buyer at the time of pickup.

A few rules that matter:

  • Do not sign the title until the buyer is present and you have been paid
  • Use blue or black ink only
  • Do not use correction fluid on the title — it voids the document entirely
  • Sign exactly as your name appears on the title, including middle initials if shown

If you have lost the title, most states allow a combination of registration and photo ID as an alternative for junk car sales. See the no-title guide for your state’s specific requirements.

Valid Photo ID

Your ID confirms you are the legal owner. Accepted forms include a driver’s license, state-issued ID card, passport, or military ID. The name on your ID needs to match the name on the title. If the title is in a slightly different format of your name — middle initial versus full middle name, for example — bring both ID and registration to establish the connection.

Keys

Having keys makes the process easier and helps the driver confirm the car’s condition. No keys is not a dealbreaker — Clunqr tows vehicles without keys every day. The offer may be slightly lower if no keys are available, but it is rarely more than $10 to $25.

Registration

Even expired registration is useful. It helps verify ownership when a title is unavailable and confirms the vehicle is registered to you. Check the glove compartment first — registration is often still there long after sellers think they have cleaned out the car.

If You Do Not Have the Title

A missing title does not disqualify the sale in most states. Requirements vary by state — see the full no-title guide for what your state specifically accepts, or the state pages for New York, Florida, Texas, and California.

How to Prepare Before Scheduling Pickup

Before you call for a quote:

  • Locate your title or identify your alternative documentation
  • Find your keys
  • Know your vehicle’s year, make, model, and approximate mileage
  • Check whether the catalytic converter is still present (buyers will ask)
  • Get at least two quotes before committing

Before pickup day:

  • Remove all personal belongings (see the full checklist below)
  • Remove license plates if your state requires you to surrender them
  • Cancel or transfer your car insurance after the vehicle is picked up
  • Make sure the vehicle is accessible for a flatbed truck — clear the driveway, note any low-clearance issues or unpaved ground

What to Remove From Your Car

Once the car leaves your driveway, anything left inside is gone. Go through every compartment before pickup day.

Inside the cabin:

  • Glove compartment
  • Center console
  • Door pockets
  • Under all seats
  • Sun visor (garage door openers, toll transponders, parking permits)

Trunk and cargo area:

  • Spare tire, if you want to keep it
  • Tools, jack, and lug wrench
  • Emergency kit
  • Jumper cables
  • Any cargo or personal property

Aftermarket items worth removing:

  • Custom stereo or speakers
  • GPS devices
  • Dash cameras
  • Phone mounts
  • Any aftermarket electronics you installed

Easy to forget:

  • License plates (required to surrender in most states)
  • Toll transponders — you will be billed for any tolls incurred after the sale if the transponder stays in the car
  • Child car seats
  • House or office keys on the key ring
  • Parking permits attached to the windshield

Take photos of your car’s condition before pickup. A quick walk-around with your phone takes two minutes and protects you if any questions arise later about the vehicle’s state at the time of sale.

Should You Remove Aftermarket Parts?

PartRemove before selling?Why
Expensive stereo or speakersYesEasy to remove and sell separately; buyers do not value aftermarket audio
Custom wheelsConsider itIf worth $500 or more, selling separately may net more than the offer credit
Recently purchased batteryConsider itEasy to sell locally for $20 to $40; buyers value a battery at less than replacement cost
Catalytic converterNoRemoving it significantly reduces your offer — often by $100 to $400 depending on the vehicle
Engine or transmissionNoMajor components are a large part of what drives the offer above scrap weight
Factory wheels and tiresNoRemoving them reduces the offer more than they are worth to sell separately in most cases

The general rule: keep everything that came installed from the factory. Remove everything you added yourself. For the catalytic converter specifically — it is the single highest-value component on most junk cars, and every buyer will check for it at pickup. Removing it before selling almost always costs you more than it gains.

What to Expect on Pickup Day

  1. Driver arrives and calls ahead. The Clunqr driver arrives during your scheduled window and typically calls or texts when 15 to 20 minutes away.

  2. Quick vehicle inspection. The driver verifies the vehicle matches your description — condition, present components, title situation. This takes about five minutes. If everything matches, the quoted price holds.

  3. Sign the paperwork. You sign over the title and any required state forms. The driver handles all DMV notification paperwork. Clunqr completes and files the Notice of Transfer in states that require it, so your liability ends at pickup.

  4. Get paid. You receive cash before the vehicle is loaded on the truck. Count it before signing anything.

  5. Vehicle is towed away. The driver loads the car and you are done. Total time from arrival to departure is typically 15 to 30 minutes.

What Clunqr Handles for You

  • Free flatbed towing — included in every offer, no deductions at pickup
  • Paperwork — the driver arrives with all required forms prepared for your vehicle and state
  • DMV notification — Clunqr files the transfer notification so you are not liable for what happens to the vehicle after pickup
  • Any condition — running, non-running, accident-damaged, high mileage; we buy all of it
