Preparing a car to be junked takes a few simple steps to protect yourself and ensure a smooth transaction.
Before the junk car buyer or tow truck arrives:
- Remove personal belongings: Check the glove box, trunk, under seats, door pockets, and center console. Buyers are not responsible for items left behind.
- Gather paperwork: Locate the title, registration, and your ID. Most buyers require the title to complete the sale.
- Remove license plates: Most states require you to return plates to the DMV or transfer them to another vehicle.
- Cancel or transfer insurance: Contact your insurance company to end coverage after the car is picked up.
- Take photos: Document the vehicle’s condition for your records.
- Check for valuable items to remove: Aftermarket stereos, GPS units, child car seats, roof racks, and personal accessories.
You do not need to clean the car, drain fluids, or make repairs. Junk car buyers and scrap yards purchase vehicles as-is. If the car is not running, make sure the buyer knows the location and can access it for towing or hauling.
